LED headlights are known to be products commonly used in stadiums, shopping centers, exhibition halls, parking lots, billboards, parks… So what are the advantages of these types of lights? When used at artificial football fields? Why should you use these LED lights instead of traditional lights? Let’s find the answer with LUX98 SPORTS through the article below!
Advantage 1: LED soccer field headlights do not flicker like traditional soccer field lights
LED soccer field headlights use DC power, so the brightness at the TV receiver will naturally be uniform. Therefore, for each position on the field, only one light needs to be used for lighting. Compared to needing to use 3 traditional lights, when using LED soccer field lights, you only need to use 1 light, which will help reduce glare significantly.
Traditional football field lights use AC power, although the ballast increases the frequency of the AC power before supplying the lights so that the eye does not perceive the flickering phenomenon. But when showing slow motion situations taking place at high speed, the television image will jerk and flicker.
To better understand why using traditional soccer field lights the slow-motion projection image flickers, please take a look at the image below.
To solve the flickering problem of traditional lights, people install 3 sets of lights on 3 phases of the electrical system to illuminate each position on the field. At this time, the brightness of the frames at the TV receiver (shown in Figure 1) will be more uniform, and the slow motion projection image will no longer flicker.
Advantage 2: LED soccer field headlights emit light more evenly than traditional soccer field lights
The light-emitting components of the LED soccer field headlights are LED chips that are evenly distributed on the PCB circuit board, so the light emitted from the lamp will be evenly distributed in the beam angle (opening angle of the lamp).
On the contrary, the light emitting components of traditional soccer field lights are glass bulbs. The light emitted from the glass bulbs will create hot spots (very bright spots) right under the center of the lamp and dark spots (low spots). am) located not far from hot spots. Therefore, for dark spots to be bright enough, there will always be very bright spots causing glare.
Advantage 3: LED soccer field headlights transmit light farther than traditional soccer field lights
The auxiliary optical component of traditional soccer field lights only has a lampshade used to focus the light beam, but the lampshade does not help the light travel far. To ensure enough brightness on the field surface, the lights must be hung low, this will cause uncomfortable glare for the players, coaching staff, and referees.
Unlike traditional soccer field lights, the light emitting components of LED soccer field headlights are LED chips, each LED chip will be covered by a specialized lens (Figure 3), so the light emitted from the LED light will travel far. Good. Therefore, when using LED soccer field lights, the lights can be hung higher than when using traditional lights, helping to increase the distance from the lights to the players’ eyes to reduce glare on the field.
At this point, you clearly understand why using LED headlights in artificial turf construction will help reduce glare significantly compared to using traditional soccer field lights. However, just using LED soccer field lights does not mean that every position on the field will not be glared.
Note the LED headlight installation location and lighting design rules
To ensure that the LED floodlight system on the field does not cause glare, the lighting design stage needs to be done carefully. Note that glare depends on two factors: location on the field and viewing direction. Therefore, it is necessary to check the glare at the mesh positions on the field, each position needs to be reviewed 360 degrees as shown in Figure 4, to ensure that the UGR in all directions is < 50 (UGR threshold applies to outdoor sports fields).
The rules for lighting design of outdoor sports fields are the same. But each sport has its own characteristics and lighting standards are also different. To understand more, read more lighting design tutorials: stadiums, football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, golf courses…
